How Are We Leaving Others Feeling?

Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters.

Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do. And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with—even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently.

When others differ in opinion from us it can be difficult to accept or welcome them with open arms. Oftentimes our own opinions overtake our capacity to be open to others. When we become aware of this is when we must begin to turn our interactions over to God.

The world might have us believe that we have the power to will ourselves into doing things differently. This is, unfortunately, where we meet our demise every time. We think that we have the power to change when only God has the power to do the changing. Whether in others or ourselves.

As our eyes are opened to the spaces and places we have not been extending openness or love, we must turn those things over to God. It is with Him that we are able to muster the strength to channel self control (Galatians 5:22-23) and choose our words carefully or simply listen.

We are able to stay cognizant not to be judgmental of others because of their opinions. Rather we can be present with them and recognize that the work we do is to stay focused on our journey and closeness with God. While God does the work of transforming the minds of those around us.

• When others start to share their opinions are you quick to listen or quick to share your opinion in return? Write down what it would mean to hold your opinion in order to make someone else feel welcomed in your life.

Lord, Help us to stay present as we interact with those around us. Whether family or friends, help us to know that You are the one doing the changing. The burden of salvation of others is not on us. The work we do is to stay focused on our own journey so that You can be seen by others in our walk. Use us as vessels for Your plans and will, as we seek to be disciples and make disciples. Amen.
